BSc Mental Health Nursing, Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling, MBACP
Before becoming a counsellor I spent over 25 years working in the area of mental health. After gaining a marketing degree I spent time working in various roles in mental health in the voluntary and private sector. This inspired me to train to become a mental health nurse at York Uni. I spent nearly 20 years as a nurse in the NHS and private sector. I have helped support people experiencing depression, acute anxiety, trauma, self-harm and eating disorders amongst other issues. For a number of years I specialised in addiction nursing, treating people with substance and behavioural addictions. Also supporting those impacted the addiction of family members.

My approach to counselling is a person-centred one. It is grounded in the belief that meaningful change can take place when someone is provided with a space where they feel heard, accepted and understood. Rather than being told what to do, therapy becomes a collaborative process. Providing a space to explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. In person-centred counselling the focus isn’t on ‘fixing’ you, because the assumption is that you are not broken. Instead we’ll work to create the conditions where you can begin to understand yourself more fully, re-connect with your experience and develop a greater sense of self-trust and clarity.
I have a special interest and experience in helping people experiencing grief and loss. Helping them make sense of their emotions, understanding the impact of their loss and finding new ways of coping without the person who has died. Also helping people experiencing loss in all its other forms, such as a relationship, career and sense of purpose and identity.
I also have a special interest helping people in the LGBTQ+ community and the challenges they face. This can include discrimination, sense of identity, family conflict and relationship difficulties.
I see the counselling relationship as a collaborative one. Where I work alongside you and where I get to know the ‘real’ you. I won’t impose solutions but instead help you discover your own insights and discover a path forward. The aim is to empower you to develop self-awareness and confidence, trust yourself and and make choices that align with your authentic self. I offer a space where you can explore your experiences, process your emotions and gain understanding and re-connect with yourself. I will help you challenge whatever is getting in your way, identify unhealthy patterns, explore what change you would like to see and how to achieve this. We will work together so you can move from feeling stuck to creating lasting change in your life.
My approach is warm, reflective and puts you at the heart of the process. I offer a space where you won’t feel judged, rushed or pressured to present yourself in a certain way. My approach is also flexible, acknowledging that each person has unique needs from therapy rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
